Throughout history, the black owned businesses has been vital to the economic and social progress of most nations. Even today, there are Black-owned businesses on every major street corner. Even though, Black Americans make up a small percentage of the population, they own a significant portion of the total number of Black-owned businesses in the United States. Most notably, the city of New Orleans is synonymous with the most successful black-owned businesses in the country. Thanks to the efforts of such business moguls as Buddy Ebsen and Dr. King Lewis, New Orleans was able to retain its reputation as a place where people from all walks of life can thrive. The evolution of black business app can largely be attributed to two important events: The Civil Rights Movement and the decimation of the Great Depression. Severe economic conditions throughout the United States (especially in the Deep South) resulted in black people being denied access to much of the capital that was available to white Americans. This meant that the development of black-owned businesses was slow at best. However, after the Civil Rights Movement exploded in the 1960s, things dramatically changed for the better, and black people were then granted equal rights and freedoms that white Americans had only just a few short years before. During this same period of time, another phenomenon took place which gave birth to one of the longest running American entrepreneurs ever, Ebenezer Scrooge. Although, this businessman might be considered a social outcast by many, he was one of the first black Americans to use his mind to bring about positive changes in society. And, even today, people still remember the humble Scrooge for his great kindness and generosity towards all of his fellow men. No other businessman created such an enduring legacy of providing shelter and food to so many of his fellow men, but rather for his uniquely innovative and progressive civil rights philosophies. Of course, the aforementioned businessmen are not the only ones who made a significant impact on this budding business history. Also, there are many great minds of the past who also deserve to be remembered for their achievements. These include some of the most prominent figures from the history of the United States: George Washington, Sam Houston, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, and Oprah Winfrey. In fact, even President Barack Obama holds a strong spot in the history of entrepreneurship, as he is currently a major contributor towards the betterment of black Americans. During the early 20th century, some things have drastically changed for the better for black Americans. For example, they now have access to some of the best colleges in the entire country. Also, many of them now own businesses which they used to only dream about. Some notable examples include successful businesses which provide healthcare services, insurance companies, transportation companies, hotels, restaurants, call centers, and financial lending institutions. Perhaps, one of the most remarkable transformations that took place during this period is the emergence of a new kind of business: service oriented, or service oriented businesses. Most of these businesses were started by African-Americans, who combined their efforts to offer their customers quality services at an affordable price. Examples of these are car washes, which were once offered only to the extremely wealthy, and which became popular in urban areas. Also, many doctors, teachers, and engineers came up in this new class. Today, cities like Cleveland, Columbus, and Chicago are home to a wide array of medical and educational establishments, all of which are the result of the efforts and achievements of these pioneering black entrepreneurs.
